The microphone fits around the ear and the transmitter is magnetically attached to a receiver which has been surgically implanted in a person's scalp. Signals from the microphone are relayed directly to the nerves of the ear via electrodes implanted in the inner ear. The device enables the profoundly deaf to be aware of some sound.
