Caesarean births are usually performed when it is either dangerous or impossible to deliver the baby vaginally. Instead, the baby is delivered through an incision in the walls of the mother's abdomen and uterus. This woman had an epidural anaesthetic to numb her abdomen, rather than a general anaesthetic.
