Young girl with fever has oral temperature taken
Measuring oral temperature. Mother takes the temperature of her feverish young daughter with a digital thermometer. The bulb of the thermometer is placed in the mouth, and temperature is displayed in the window. In this case the temperature displayed is 38.8 Celsius. Fever, also known as pyrexia, is defined as a body temperature above 37 Celsius (98.6 Fahrenheit) if measured in the mouth. Most fevers are caused by bacterial or viral infections and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as shivering, sweating, thirst and hot skin.
