Illustration of carcinoma of the external vagina. This malignant tumour is positioned on the labia minora, the inner vulval lip of the female external genitalia (lower centre, left). The vaginal opening is beside it; the urethral orifice is above the vagina, at centre. This is a primary carcinoma, an initial site of cancer, which may already have spread to the inner vaginal wall. It is a rare form of female cancer, more common being cancers of the ovary, cervix, or breast. A vaginal carcinoma located on the skin surface would be a candidate for radiotherapy, perhaps surgery, and chemotherapy. This rare cancer is more likely to occur in women that have reached the menopause.
