Chemist purifies proteins in Hepatitis C research
Viral protein purification. Organic chemist in a laboratory purifies a protein that will be used in hepatitis C virus research. During purification and evaporation, the protein product in the flask changes colour from brown (at right) to yellow (far right). Research into hepatitis C involves producing molecules that may be effective against the virus. Scientist's are attempting to mimic proteins found in the hepatitis C virus, as well as to construct a chimaera of this virus in the laboratory. By understanding the structure of the hepatitis C virus, and the way it infects human cells, it is hoped a vaccine will be produced.
