Human brain
Human brain. Healthy human brain seen from the front. It has been donated for medical research at the Harvard Brain and Tissue Resource Centre, USA. The two hemispheres that make up the cerebrum are seen here. Dividing them is a deep fold known as the longitudinal fissure. The cerebral tissues are involved in conscious thought processes and in voluntary body activity. Some of these activities are controlled mainly by just one hemisphere. An adult human brain weighs about 1400 grams. The Harvard Brain and Tissue Resource Centre is the largest brain bank in the world. It stores over 3,000 brains, which are available to researchers studying disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia.
