False-colour SEM of villi in jejunum
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the interior of the human jejenum, a section of the small intestine, the site of absorption of the products of digestion. The jejunum is deeply folded & lined with tongue-shaped projections or villi, which are covered by absorptive & goblet cells. The villi are a structural modification to increase the effective absorptive & secretory surface of the mucous membrane. The secretions of the goblet cells acts to protect & lubricate the gut & help in the formation of faeces. Approximate magnification: x70 at 6x7cm size.
