The bony tissue is coloured pink with the spinal column at bottom centre. The small yellow and green area found above the spinal column is the descending branch of the aorta. The liver has many vital functions in the body. Along with the kidneys it clears the blood of drugs and poisonous substances that would otherwise accumulate in the bloodstream. It produces important proteins such as albumin, coagulation factors and globin, a constituent of the oxygen-carrying pigment haemoglobin.
