Mitosis, light micrograph
Mitosis. Confocal light micrograph of HeLa cells during mitosis (nuclear division). Mitosis is the formation of two daughter nuclei from one parent nucleus. The majority of cells are in interphase, between divisions. The cell at lower centre is in metaphase. The chromosomes (orange) are lined up along the centre of the cell. At upper centre a cell is in anaphase, the two identical chromatids that make up each chromosome have been separated to opposite poles of the cell. At bottom right two daughter cells are near the end of cytokinesis (cellular division). Microtubules, which are part of the cell's cytoskeleton, are green. Magnification: x250 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
