Mitosis. Confocal light micrograph of HeLa cells during mitosis (nuclear division). Mitosis is the formation of two daughter nuclei from one parent nucleus. The cells at top and centre are in interphase, between divisions. The cell at left is in metaphase. The chromosomes (pink) are lined up along the centre of the cell. The cell at bottom is at the start of anaphase, the two identical chromatids that make up each chromosome are being separated to opposite poles of the cell. Microtubules, which are part of the cell's cytoskeleton, are yellow.
