HeLa cell, light micrograph
Confocal light micrograph of a HeLa cell during interphase. Interphase is the resting stage when the spindle structures, which play a vital role in cell division, are formed. The green/yellow structures surrounding the nucleus (purple/pink) are microtubules, part of the cell's cytoskeleton. Along with actin filaments, microtubules separate the chromosomes during mitosis. HeLa cells are a continuously cultured cell line of human cancer cells that are widely used in biological and medical research. They are immortal and so thrive in the laboratory. Magnification: x2400 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
