SEST telescope at La Silla
SEST dish above a mountainous landscape. The SEST (Swedish-ESO sub-millimetre telescope) has a 15 metre diameter dish. It is used for observations at wavelengths between 42 and 0.8 millimetres, a type of radio radiation. La Silla is in the Chilean Atacama Desert, which is very dry and at high altitude (2400 metres). These conditions are ideal for astronomical observations.
