Cosmic ray research laboratory
Cosmic ray research laboratory. Laboratory apparatus for researching the effects of cosmic rays on spacecraft. Cosmic rays are highly energised radioactive particles that occur naturally in space. High speed cosmic rays can damage DNA, increasing the risk of cancers and other medical disorders. With this in mind, researchers are investigating the ways in which spacecraft can offer space crews protection from the cosmic rays. Photographed at the University of Leicester, UK.
