Voyager 2 & Neptune
Artist's impression of the Voyager 2 spacecraft during its encounter with the planet Neptune on August 24, 1989. The bright object at upper right is the Sun, which appears like a star from the distance of Neptune. Launched in 1977, Voyager 2 visited Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus before reaching Neptune, its last port of call in the Solar System. After flying over Neptune's north pole, it will rendezvous with the planet's giant moon, Triton. Neptune is the fourth largest planet in the Solar System and the outermost of the four great gas giants. Its atmosphere consists mainly of hydrogen and helium.
