Martian Environment Simulator
Martian Environment Simulator (MES) and space scientist Derek Pullan. This device is used to reproduce the atmospheric conditions of Mars in the laboratory. The pressure at the Martian surface is less than 1% of that at sea level on Earth. The Martian atmosphere is 95% carbon dioxide. The white material at top is insulation for the liquid nitrogen supply used for cooling the device to Martian temperatures, which can fall to -100 degrees Celsius at night. The MES has been used to test instruments on the European Space Agency's Beagle 2 spacecraft. Photographed at the Space Research Centre, University of Leicester, UK.
