Martian river delta, satellite image
Martian river delta, colour-enhanced satellite image. This dried up delta is in Jezero Crater, which once held a lake. Ancient rivers ferried clay-like minerals (green) and other minerals (other colours) into the lake, forming the delta (fan-shaped area). Because clay rocks tend to trap and preserve organic matter, it is thought such areas would be a good place to look for signs of ancient life. Image obtained in 2008 by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometers for Mars (CRISM) instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft.
