Artist's impression of the view on Io, the inner- most of the Galilean satellites (the four major moons of Jupiter). Continuous volcanic activity on the Jovian satellite was discovered by the two Voyager spacecraft when they passed through the Jovian system in March and July 1979. The heating effect responsible for this activity is thought to arise from internal stresses due to tidal effects. This image shows a prominent lake of sulphur-rich lava at right and the eruption of a sulphur- dioxide geyser in the background. Jupiter, 421,760 km away, is visible above the horizon, as is the sun which resembles a bright star at left. A spaceship has landed at right.
