Europa's surface
Europa. Enhanced-colour Galileo orbiter image of part of the northern hemisphere of Europa, a moon of Jupiter. North is at lower left. The surface of Europa is covered in water ice (blue/white). Cutt- ing through the ice are ridges (brown/orange) that may be the result of cryovolcanic activity as erupted water or partially molten water ice froze on the cold surface. Their colour may be due to them containing evaporites such as mineral salts. This view was produced from a high resolution image taken on 31 May 1998 and a low resolution image taken on 28 June 1996 by Galileo's Solid State Imaging (SSI) camera. It has an area of about 800x350 km and a resolution of 230 metres.
