Saturn's rings, Cassini image
Saturn's rings, Cassini image. This view is from about 40 degrees above the ring plane. The rings surrounding Saturn are composed mainly of ice, a small percentage of carbon and organic impurities (tholin). The sunlit side of the planet appears overexposed and its shadow extends across the rings at right. This image is a mosaic of 36 separate images taken with red, green and blue spectral filters. It was obtained with the wide- angle camera onboard the Cassini spacecraft on January 19th 2007, at a distance of approximately 1.23 million kilometres from Saturn.
