Annular solar eclipse. Image 1 of 14. First contact during an annular solar eclipse. The Moon (upper left) is beginning to move in front of the Sun. This process takes several hours, and may result in a partial, full or annular eclipse. In this case, the Moon is at a distant point in its orbit, and this resulted in an annular eclipse where the outer edge of the Sun formed a ring around the Moon.
