Partial solar eclipse geometry, artwork
Partial solar eclipse geometry, computer artwork. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes across the Sun as seen from the Earth. The Moon's shadow consists of a dark central umbra surrounded by the lighter penumbra. A total eclipse is seen from within the umbra. Seen here is a partial eclipse, caused by the Earth moving into the penumbra region only. In this situation no part of the Earth will experience a total eclipse.
