Optical image of the constellation Orion and trees
Orion through trees. Optical image of the constellation Orion between trees in a forest. Orion is a bright and prominent constellation. It contains the bright stars Betelgeuse (orange, centre), the 10th brightest in the sky, and Rigel (lower right), the 7th brightest. Between these two lie the three stars of Orion's belt. Below the belt is the famous Orion nebula (M42), a huge region of glowing pink gas. The belt can be used as a pointer to other stars. Following the line to lower left, Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, can be seen shining through trees. Following the line to upper right a similar amount leads to the red giant star Aldebaran. North is at top.
