CCD optical image of the Gum nebula
Gum nebula. Enhanced optical image of the Gum nebula, the largest nebula in the sky. It is about 60 moon widths across. At centre is the Vela Supe- rnova Remnant (green wisps), glowing gas which is the remains of a star which ended its life in a supernova explosion about 11,000 years ago. The energy released by the supernova is thought to be the main power source for the Gum nebula. Three bright stars are visible here: Lambda Velorum (far left), Zeta Puppis (upper right) and Gamma Velorum (lower right). This image was produced by a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera, which stores images electronically rather than on film.
