Molecular cloud, supercomputer simulation
Molecular cloud. Supercomputer simulation of turbulence within a molecular cloud. Colour indicates density, blue is low density and yellow is high density. Molecular clouds within the interstellar medium (ISM), the region of dust and gas present within galaxies, are where new stars form. Supercomputers are used to simulate the conditions in molecular clouds (such as turbulence) that can give rise to starbirth. Simulation by Daniel Price, Exeter University, UK, using the SPLASH visualisation software.
