Star forming region
Star forming regions. Coloured infrared image of the star forming regions Sharpless 254 to 258. These are regions of on-going star formation, with hot ionising stars surrounded by clouds of hydrogen gas. Sharpless 255 (just above centre) contains a cluster of high-mass, infrared-bright young stars which appear red as they are still embedded in a molecular cloud. These objects are part of the Gemini OB1 molecular cloud, about 8150 light years from Earth. This image was made as part of the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) project.
