Astronomical spectroscopy is the production and interpretation of spectra from extraterrestrial electromagnetic radiation. In this case a spectrum of visible light is shown. Characteristic bands within a spectrum enable the atoms, molecules and ions producing them to be identified. The width and shape of bands allows the temperature, pressure and movement of astronomical bodies to be measured.
