Alien planet
Alien world. Artwork of an Earth-like planet that could exist in the CM Draconis binary star system. The planet (seen in a crescent phase) is shown as having clouds and water. CM Draconis is around 57 light years from Earth. Two such planets are suspected to orbit within the habitable zone around these stars, where water can exist in liquid form. The effects of the two stars of the binary system (upper left) would be to produce complex seasonal and climate patterns. This planet was detected by observing decreases in the brightness of the stars as the planet eclipses them. This method only works when the orbital plane is seen edge-on from Earth.
