PKS 2005-489 gamma ray burst, artwork
PKS 2005-489 gamma ray burst. Artwork of a gamma ray burst within the active galaxy PKS 2005-489. GRBs are extremely high-energy events. The burst, a flash of radiation seen as two jets, may be as bright as the rest of the universe combined for a few seconds. They are thought to be extremely distant, up to 12 billion light years away. They may be the result of a neutron star being torn apart by a black hole, or activity at the centre of a galaxy. PKS 2005-489 was studied with the HESS gamma ray telescope, which confirmed gamma ray emissions and that this was an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The results were published in 2005.
