Artwork showing a wave in the Milky Way
Galactic wave. Conceptual artwork of a wave in the disc of the Milky Way galaxy. The nucleus of the galaxy is seen at centre right, with several globular star clusters around it. The disc of our galaxy is made mainly of hot young stars and starbirth regions. These are more common in the spiral arms. It is thought that spiral arms are the result of density waves revolving around the galaxy at a different speed to the orbit of the stars. As such, individual stars move in and out of spiral arms over time. This image is based on a similar picture of a (sea) wave by the Japanese artist Hokusai.
