Map showing the Perseus Arm in the Milky Way
The Perseus Arm. Map of the Perseus spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy. The diameter of the region shown is about 9000 light years. Pink areas are bright nebulae which are associated with clusters of young, hot stars (white & blue circles). The nebulae are formed by hydrogen which is ionised and lit up by the ultraviolet radiation of stars stars in the clusters. Clouds of neutral hydrogen are yellow. Molecular clouds (orange) are made up of dust and molecules; they are often associated with regions of star formation. Purple circles are supernova remnants. The Henbest/Baum galaxy map is based on the location of 1500 bright stars, nebulae and other objects.
