Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300
Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300, computer artwork. This galaxy lies around 75 million light years from Earth in the constellation Eridanus. The central bar is some 150,000 light years wide. The blue colour of the spiral arms is due to their high population of hot, young, blue stars, while the orange nucleus contains more older redder stars. Several pink starbirth regions, huge clouds of glowing gas, are seen in the spiral arms. For an image showing a supernova in this galaxy, see image R730/066.
