Peculiar spiral galaxy (NGC 3718)
Peculiar spiral galaxy (NGC 3718), optical image. Located around 52 million light years from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major, NGC 3718 (right) is an irregular spiral galaxy. The reasons for its unusual shape, with wispy outer arms and unstructured centre, are unknown. There is a dark dust lane silhouetted across the galaxy's centre. The smaller galaxy to the left is NGC 3729.
