Interacting galaxies
Interacting galaxies. Optical image of the interacting galaxies NGC 5078 (centre) and IC 879 (lower left). The interaction has caused the smaller galaxy to be distorted into an S-shape, and also probably led to the warping of the irregular dust lane seen crossing the larger galaxy. Interactions such as this may lead to increased star formation in the galaxies due to rapid density changes.
