Soyuz rocket assembly
Soyuz rocket assembly at the Samara Space Centre, Russia. The components seen here are the boosters, to be used in the first stage of the launch. The Soyuz rocket is a three- stage launch vehicle, designed to launch payloads, such as satellites, into Earth orbit. Four booster components combine to form the first (booster) stage of the launch. Two more stages, sitting on top of the booster stage, take over after this initial boost. The rockets are being assembled by Starsem, a French-Russian consortium that provides commercial launch services. Photographed in December 1998.
