Athabasca tar sands
Athabasca tar sands, Alberta, Canada, landsat image. This area of tar sands (blue), or oilsand, contains a third of the world's supply of petroleum. Tar sand is a combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen. The bitumen is mined from wells and then refined into petroleum. The Athabasca River runs alongside the tar sands.
