k Falkirk Wheel Falkirk Wheel. This is a type of lock that moves boats between the Union Canal not seen and the Forth Clyde Canal bottom centre. These canals, disused since the 1960s, originally had 11 locks over a distance of 1.5 kilometres, which connected the two waterways. The aerial extension to the Union Canal upper right along with the wheel were constructed as a rotating boat lift.
