Car park
Car park next to a large shopping centre. Large expanses of asphalt, as seen here, heat up in the sun and are thought to contribute to what is known as the urban heat island effect. Urban structures such as pavements, buildings and car parks absorb and emit more heat than natural landscapes such as grass, rivers and forests. This can lead to the air over urban areas being several degrees Celsius higher than their surroundings. This can affect local weather patterns, and increased rainfall has been detected in summer over and downwind of major cities. Photographed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.
