Shark protection device
Shark protection device. Diver testing the shark POD (protective oceanic device), a piece of equipment designed to repel shark attacks. The POD fixes to a diver's oxygen tank, with an emitter on one of the flippers. The trigger device, held in the hand, is shown in this image. It uses electromagnetic signals to confuse and disorientate sharks. Sharks have a highly sophisticated sense that detects the electrical impulses produced by potential prey. The designers of the POD found a frequency and strength which affected this sense, causing distress for some of the more dangerous sharks: great whites, bull and tiger sharks. Photographed off Rangiroa Atoll in French Polynesia.
