Flamingos at Laguna Colorado, Bolivia
Laguna Colorado, a shallow salt lake in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve of the Bolivia altiplano. The lake contains white borax deposits, which contrast with the reddish colour of the water caused by red sediments and the pigmentation found in some of the algae. It is home to breeds of flamingos, who feed on the algae in the shallow water and it is this diet of algae, high in alpha and beta carotenoid pigments, including canthaxanthin, that gives the pink colour to the flamingoes., Photo by DAVID TAYLOR/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
