Coloured TEM of a malaria infected red blood cell
Malaria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a human red blood cell infected by the malaria parasite, a protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. The green areas are Plasmodium cells called merozoites, produced by asexual division (schizogony). The merozoites will burst from the cell & infect other red cells. The synchronised release of merozoites in the body causes bouts of shivering, fever & sweating, symptoms of the disease. The sexual phase of the Plasmodium life cycle occurs in the stomach and digestive glands of the malaria mosquito, Anopheles sp. Magnification: x7,700 at 6x7cm size. x23,000 at 8x10ins
