Necator americanus is a parasitic nematode of the human gut. The butterfly-shaped structure is the copulatory bursa with the spicules at centre. It is thought that the bursa may be sensitive to substances produced by the female's reproductive organs. The bursa is used to embrace the female and the copulatory spicules are inserted into the female genital opening to enable sperm to be transferred. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
