Crab locomotion
Crab locomotion. Artwork illustrating the movement of a Hawaiian rock crab (Grapsus tenuicrustatus) in water. This crab is found in the intertidal region of marine coastal environments. When out of the water (upper left) it stands tall on its legs. From left to right, four crabs display different ways of moving around in the water. The crab will spread its legs out to move around on the ocean floor in the breaking waves (left). It will then use its eight jointed legs to control its motion in the rough surf. The middle images show it using one or more legs to push off from the floor or slow its motion. Finally, it can also use none of its legs and just glide with the waves (right).
