False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (view from above). At top is the head with long antennae and compound eyes. The flattened body is oval in shape; the forewings are hardened and it is the hindwings beneath these that are used for flight; on the last segment of the abdomen are a pair of cerci (sensory structures). The legs are spined. Periplaneta americana is a large, nocturnal (night active) insect that can move fast and prefers warmth. Originally from Florida, it has become a widespread household pest in many countries. Their diet is broad and they are known to carry disease. Magnification: x5 at 4x5 inch size, x3 at 6x7cm.
