Praying mantis
Praying mantis (Family Mantidae) camouflaged amongst leaves. The praying mantis is a carnivorous insect that is a sit-and-wait predator. It sits camouflaged in foliage, waiting for its prey to come near enough for it to strike. It uses its powerful spiny front legs, which when resting are held in a praying position, to grab and hold on to its prey. Praying mantises eat other insects and occasionally small birds and mammals. The female eats the male during or after mating. Praying mantises are found in tropical and warm temperate regions throughout the world. Photographed in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa.
