Locusts
Locusts. Macrophotograph of the head of a locust (order Orthoptera) with another locust on a twig at upper left. The locusts' compound eyes (black) can be seen, with their antennae protruding from their heads in front of the eyes. The wings and a powerful hind leg can be seen on the locust at upper left. These insects feed on vegetation in arid areas. Some species of locust form huge swarms of millions of individuals when their population rises above a critical level. Such swarms destroy all vegetation in their path. Magnification unknown.
