Lily beetles mating
Lily beetles (Lilioceris lilii) mating on a lily leaf (Lilium 'Casablanca'). This pest was originally from Asia. It was first recorded in the UK in 1940, in southern England. It has been gradually spreading northwards and westwards and is becoming a common pest of gardens. The female lays 200-300 eggs in early summer, mainly on lilies, but also on fritillaries, Nomocharis and Solomon's seal (Polygonatum sp.). The larvae eat the foliage and cause severe damage.
