Scanning electron micrograph of a tracheal tube running from an anterior spiracle (right) into the interior of the puparium of a fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster (wild type Oregon R). The breathing apparatus of the pupa is shed with the puparium on eclosion (hatching). It consists of 4 spiracles, which project from the front & rear of the puparium & open to the air; & the tracheal tubes, which convey the air around the inside. The tracheal tubes are made of chitin, a tough polysaccharide, which is laid down in coils called taeniola. This is one of two main airways called lateral trunks. Magnification X650 (at 10x8 size).
