Crane fly, SEM
Crane fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a crane fly (family Tipulidae) or daddy- long-legs. The fly's compound eyes (red) and upper body (thorax, centre left) are seen, as well as its long and fragile legs. The crane fly is a primitive insect with a single pair of wings (not seen). The legs are easily discarded if they become trapped. Magnification: x44 at 6x7cm size.
