The imago bursts out of its pupa using an inflatable sac ptilinum, a lipshaped ridge in the middle of its head. This sac is pumped up with blood, which causes the case to split. It is withdrawn permanently into the head after hatching. Two large compound eyes red are seen, with three simple eyes ocelli, red between them.
