Bluebottle fly, SEM
Bluebottle fly (Calliphora sp.), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). One of its large compound eyes (dark green) is at centre right. The fly's body is covered in sensory hairs. This common fly feeds on rotting animal and vegetable matter. It is considered a domestic pest as it often spreads bacteria onto food. Magnification: x20 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
